Charlotte

Charlotte is an eight-year-old girl who was involved in a road traffic accident at a much younger age when she was travelling as a backseat passenger.  She sustained a very high level spinal injury which left her tetraplegic and unable to breathe independently, requiring 24-hour ventilation.

Ainscough Associates helped Charlotte and her family in the following ways:

  • Adequate coordination of discharge planning from the hospital/PCT was very poor and the case manager had to step into this role, which involved coordination of a broad range of professionals and services
  • Set up of a privately funded, comprehensive 24-hour care package, working with a specialist care provider.
  • Instructed a wide range of private therapy services including a play specialist, family therapist, and physiotherapist.  Also instructed were specialists in provision of technology equipment, seating and posture, wheelchair provision and adaptation.
  • Oversaw provision of a substantial amount of specialist equipment including access to communication and environmental control technology
  • After lengthy explorations into possible adaptations to Charlotte’s new property it was decided that this was not the best way forward and the case manager ran an architectural competition for the design of a newbuild property with guidance from the Royal Institute of British Architects.
  • Extensive involvement with Charlotte's education in a mainstream environment and provision of advice and assistance in relation to matters of inclusion, helping the school to deal with special educational needs and implementation of her statement.
